The Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (MCCLA) was established in 1977 by artists and community activists with a shared vision to promote, preserve and develop the Latino cultural arts that reflect the living tradition and experiences of the Chicano, Central and South American, and Caribbean people.
Over 40 years of work encourage us to continue with our mission: developing, promoting and preserving the Latino Cultural values through arts. MCCLA’s theater, gallery, arts and printmaking facilities, and class offerings make art accessible to all, providing an opportunity that is often lacking to those with limited financial resources.
We are so proud that:
We offer 35 + classes a week in multiple artistic disciplines.
Low cost and free art education programs are offered for adults and children.
Numerous artists from Mission Gráfica, our very own printmaking studio, have shown their work in exhibits throughout USA, Latin America and abroad.
Renowned artists from around the world have performed and exhibited at MCCLA.
2,500 plus prints from Mission Gráfica / La Raza Graphics Collection are now housed at UC Santa Barbara for public access.
The recent restoration of the Spirit of the Arts Mural, highly visible in the heart of the Mission, will increase social cohesion between the incoming and historical communities in the Mission District.
The history of MCCLA is directly linked to a concept that embodies the pre-Cortezan belief that culture is not something that is static but rather is linked to an ever-changing future that is reflected by contemporary actions and activities. This has been the path that MCCLA has followed for the last 40 years.
