This is a Zoom workshop for the whole family! Get into the holiday spirit and make your own wrapping paper. With a few simple supplies, students will learn how to design their own custom roller that can be used on paper or fabric. The instructor will show examples of student work and will discuss the different inks needed for paper and fabric.

Materials

  • Plexiglass plate for tray for rolling out ink
  • Brayer
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Self-adhesive craft foam (Amazon) if you have a very young child who cannot cut foam, you can purchase self-adhesive foam shapes that will work nicely. (Amazon)
  • Lint roller
  • Options for rolling or tubes:
    • Rolling pin (thrift store!)
    • Cardboard tubes (like the ones that come with aluminum foil or plastic wrap)
    • Craft tubes (12 pack $7.99 Amazon)
    • Mailing Tubes
  • 24” x 36” pad of drawing paper
  • Brown Kraft paper roll or white butcher paper(cheap on Amazon)
  • Masking tape
  • Acrylic paint, fabric paint or Speedball Block Printing Ink (use what you have)
  • Hair dryer for drying paper

About the Artist

Marsha Shaw is a printmaker and book artist living in San Francisco. She received an MFA in Printmaking from California College of the Arts in San Francisco and a B.A. in Art and M.A. in Painting from California State University Northridge. Shaw is the studio manager of Mission Grafica, a printmaking studio at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, where she teaches printmaking workshops. She has lectured and taught courses in bookmaking, printmaking, design, and color theory at DeAnza Community College, California College of the Arts, San Francisco Center for the Book, Richmond Art Center, Museum of Children Art and Mendocino Art Center. Shaw’s work is in several collections and has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.
