El 2021 prolongó la pandemia. La depresión, la confusión y las pérdidas fueron para tantos el pan del dia! No obstante, la pandemia del siglo fue la pausa obligada para reflexionar, revisar los inventarios, y efectuar cambios a todo nivel. Distanciarnos y acercarnos será más que nunca un ejercicio constante y más consciente. Por ahora somos sobrevivientes (?), y como tal deseamos pertenecer. Te invitamos a salir, compartir, conocer y contar tantas y tan distintas historias, nuestras historias. ¡Hagamos el espacio!
MCCLA, por su parte, tuvo el reto de mantener sus puertas cerradas durante 10 meses, y de perder algunos miembros de su personal. Aunque físicamente cerrados, continuamos la programación en línea gratis “Desde la Cueva del Jaguar” (bandas locales y clases), y mantuvimos comunicación con artistas, maestros, grupos y agencias comunitarias. Esto mientras nos preparamos para recibir nuevamente al personal y luego al público.
En julio, junto con la ciudad de San Francisco, MCCLA abrió sus puertas al público. Comenzamos las clases, y estrenamos la premiere del mini documental: “Shamanes en la Ciudad.” La Galería tuvo 2 espectaculares exhibiciones: en septiembre, El Aniversario del Concilio de los SF Lowriders, y en octubre, “Ni Tantos ni tan Muertos (en nuestro corazón). La celebración del Día de Muertos, dedicada a 4 queridos artistas que recién partieron, fue muestra fiel de unidad con intención, y de cómo el arte y la cultura se entretejen en esta fibra, que es la vida.
El 2022, no obstante, será un año especial. Celebraremos 45 años de arte y cultura de esta gran institución en esta comunidad de la Misión, y te invitamos a que seas parte de este gran logro. Promover, preservar y desarrollar la cultura y las Artes Latinas, continúa siendo nuestra misión principal desde el 1977, y nuestro orgullo. Agradecemos a todos los que nos apoyaron de tantas maneras este año. Tu participación y colaboración como miembro de la familia del MCCLA, harán que este corazón del barrio, el Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, siga latiendo.

Celebrating 45 Years: The Heart of the Mission Keeps Beating…With You!
2021 prolonged the pandemic. Depression, confusion and losses were daily bread for so many! The pandemic of the century, nonetheless, was the obligated pause to reflect, check our many inventories, and make changes at every level. To distance and approach ourselves will be more than ever, a most mindful and constant exercise. For now we are survivors (?) and as such, we wish to engage, come out, share, listen to and tell so many different stories; our stories. Let’s make the space!
MCCLA for one, withstood the challenge of keeping its doors closed for 10 consecutive months, and of losing some staff members along the way. Though physically closed, we continued our free online programming “Desde la Cueva del Jaguar,” (local bands and classes), and kept in touch with artists, teachers and essential community agencies. All this while preparing for the re-entry, and to welcome staff and the general public back.
In July, together with the City of San Francisco, MCCLA opened its doors to the public. Classes began, and the premiere of “Shamanes en la Ciudad” mini documentary was screened in the theatre. The Gallery showcased two spectacular exhibits: The SF Lowriders Council Anniversary in September, and the “Neither so Many, Nor So Dead” (in our heart) in October. The Day of the Dead Celebration, dedicated to 4 beloved community artists who recently passed, was a sheer display of unity with intention, and of how art and culture interweave into this fabric we call Life.
2022, however, will be a special year. We’ll celebrate the 45 years of art and culture service of this beloved organization in our Mission community, and invite you to be part of this great milestone. To promote, preserve and develop the Latino Arts & Culture, has and continues to be our mission since 1977 and we’re quite proud of it!
Thanks to all who supported us in so many ways during the year. Your participation as a member of the MCCLA family, will make this heart of the Mission, the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, to keep beating.
