Queens of Cuban Music

OCT. 27th | 7:00pm - 9:00PM

NOV. 17th | 7:00pm - 9:00PM

Cuban women have specifically known how to inspire, feel, enjoy and shed light on the music of this hot land. Although only a few of them have been publicly labeled “queens”, several women have actually shaken the realm of Cuban, Latin and international music.

The Queens of Cuban Music

Cuba is all about rhythm and melody. Its children carry the taste in their blood, and they exteriorize it with the gift featured by sensitive people when it comes to spreading their feelings by means of sounds. Cuban women have specifically known how to inspire, feel, enjoy and shed light on the music of this hot land. Although only a few of them have been publicly labeled “queens”, several women have actually shaken the realm of Cuban, Latin and international music.

From the self-assurance of La Lupe, Celia Cruz’s “Azu-car”, Celina Gonzalez’s tastiness, Olga Guillot’s elegance or the extraordinary timbre of Elena Burke, the history of Cuban music is made up of numerous stars that have used their heart and talent to immortalize it on the inter- national sphere. The melody of these divas of Cuban and international music has prevailed in different genres, even in some rhythms where men have traditionally played the leading role, such as guaguancó.

Celia Cruz, Queen of Salsa

Born in Havana, Cuba on October 21, 1925 and died in New Jersey, on July 16, 2003, Cruz is known as the Queen of Cuban Salsa. Her songs have been included in over 30 movies related to Spanish American musical topics or Latin mafias. She has played Carnegie Hall, and numerous other Arenas in her colorful clothing and wigs!

Celeste Mendoza, Queen of Guaguanco

Born in Santiago de Cuba, April 6, 1930. Died in Havana, Cuba on November 16, 1998. She was one of the greatest voices of tropical music. Such genres as mambo, bolero, guapachá, rumba and especially guaguancó, she was an acclaimed figure in Cuba and overseas. She shared the stage with Benny More, Edith Piaf, Josephine Baker and Carmen Miranda, among other celebrities.

Elena Burke, Queen of Feeling in Cuba

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1922. Died in Havana in 2002. Elena’s was the feeling voice that accompanied a whole generation throughout the Havana nights. She took Cuban music to the highest level during a glorious stage of the feeling movement.

Olga Guillot

She was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1922 and died in Miami Florida in 2010. It was 1945 that her talent as a bolero singer was discovered by Facundo Rivero. Soon after her debut at a famous Havana night club. Guillot met Miguelito Valdés, who took her to New York City, where she was able to record her first album with the Decca label.

Omara Portuondo

Born in October 1930 and still singing. Her chosen genres include bolero, cancion, vocal jazz, and guaracha. Currently, she is singing at The Buena Vista Social Club in Havana, Cuba.

Latin-american cinema also produces amazing horror films. We are proud to present a couple of Horror latin-american films. Half the price of a commercial complex double the fun (and culture).

The Heart of the Mission - Book Reception
with Author Cary Cordova

BOOK RECEPTION | GALLERY | AUG. 17th, THURSDAY| Free - Donations Appreciated | 6:30-9pm

In the context of the 40th Anniversary, we proudly present The Heart of the Mission Latino Art and Politics in San Francisco w/ Author Cary Cordova.

Cary Cordova will be interviewed by Mission Local Editor Lydia Chavez about her newly published book: The Heart of the Mission, Latino Art & Politics in San Francisco (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2017) on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 6:30pm at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, 2868 Mission Street (between 24th & 25th Sts). Cordova, a San Francisco native now a professor on the American Studies faculty of the University of Texas in Austin, traces the City's Latin Quarter from its origins in North Beach to the vibrant scene in the Mission District.

After the interview, Cesar Ascarrunz and his Latin All-Stars will perform. The origins of his club, Cesar's Latin Palace (where Roccapulco now stands), were in North Beach more than 40 years ago, which Cesar then brought to the Mission where he fostered the salsa scene, featuring major bands from the East Coast.

Cordova's book can be purchased at the event and the author will be available to sign them.

The event is presented as part of the Mission Cultural Center's 40th Anniversary. Admission is free. Children are welcome. Tapas generously donated by Cha Cha Cha restaurant.

Free tickets to the event can be obtained here:

The book is available at Alley Cat Bookstore, 3036 24th Street, near Treat, where Cordova will read from her book on Sunday, Aug. 13 at 6pm.

Tejidos / Woven

May 14, 2016-June 24, 2016. Main Gallery
Opening reception: Saturday May 14, 2016 6:30pm-9pm $5
Gallery hours: Tuesdays-Saturdays 10am-5pm

Tejidos / Woven is a mixed media collaboration between Chilean artists Ximena Soza and Cristian Muñoz, which combines fiber and paint in a large installation. This work uses weaving as a visual and symbolic representation of the social fabric, reminding us that the fight for social justice anywhere in the world is part of the same struggle, because if one thread is taken out of the fabric, the whole weaving becomes unwoven. This exhibit explores global issues of social justice and human rights, such as the recent immigrant crisis in Europe, the occupation in Palestine, the disappearances of thousands during the dictatorships in Latin America, deportation in the United States and more.

Voices from the fishing villages of Peru

Short Documentary Screening and Photography Exhibition

Friday, May 27st/ Reception at 6:00pm, screening at 7:00pm
pre-sale $10, at the door $12/ Theater and Lobby

THE CARAVAN is an event featuring a collection of 5 short documentaries and photography about life along the coast of Northern Peru. From the memories and realities of the participants, we are shown how pollution, climate change, and community fortitude have become daily experiences in this shifting landscape.

The film is segmented by chapters. "The Catch" embarks on one fisherman's day out at sea as he explains the practice of responsible fishing and laments the petroleum industry's affect on marine habitats and his family's subsistence. "Waste" characterizes the common experiences of villages without potable water sources or sewage systems, but few sit so close to the iconic and ecologically diverse Seal Island. "Portraits from the Shore" are snapshots of women in the isolated village of La Islilla, who maintain the land and community while the men are absent at sea. "In Her Shoes" is the story of a woman who works from dawn 'til dusk, admiring the sea from afar since her profession had to be sacrificed in order to support her children. "From the Ground up" takes place in a shipyard where the tradition of constructing wooden vessels is still practiced by proud artisans.

Join us in experiencing our world and the problems facing the environment through another set of eyes.

DOCUPERU is a non-profit organization based in Lima, which has sought to share the power of audio visual communication in order to better represent the presently muted voices of small communities. The Caravan is an annual project that maps out a route which brings free workshops in video production, photography, drawing, and mural painting to the people.

The Living Arts

Stage Coach and The A.C.T. Master of Fine Arts Program present:

Black Orpheus: Una Historia de Amor

Adapted and directed by Stephen Buescher

Thursday, May 12 @ 7pm | Mission Cultural Center

After his beloved Eurydice is stolen by Death, guitar-toting poet Orpheus ventures into the underworld in an attempt to retrieve her. Set in a mythical barrio during Carnival, Black Orpheus: Una Historia de Amor is inspired by the play Orfeu da Conceição by Brazilian poet and playwright, Vinicius de Moraes.

This Stage Coach production layers Afro-Latino rhythms with visual storytelling to bring this vivid story to life. As they tour communities of the Bay Area, A.C.T.’s M.F.A. Program actors create a classic love story with a Carnival heartbeat.

I was born in Mexico City in a small neighborhood where every weekend was a party. I always loved dancing since I was a young boy. I started with disco, later rap, and then eventually breakdance. At 15 years old, I was attracted to Latin music: salsa, merengue, cha cha, cumbia and more. At 18 years old, I started as choreographer for ‘quinceañeras.’ I later taught aerobics and today, I teach zumba.
