Matria: Documentary Screening

Thurs Jul 26th & Fri Jul 27th, 2018
$12 • Theater (1st Floor) • 7 to 9 pm

Screening and discussion panel with director Fernando Llanos.

Matria is a documentary film about Mexican charros against Nazis, around the Second World War. Antolin Jimenez fought alongside Pancho Villa, represented the state of Oaxaca in Congress, and was the president of the National Charro Association. In 1942, as rumors spread of a Nazi invasion of Mexico, Jimenez formed and trained a group of 100,000 fighters to repel the attack.

Exploring two universes—the personal and the recent history of our country—is a great challenge and achievement of Matria, the cinematographic project, in which Fernando Llanos, better known for his plastic and visual work than his cinematographic career, entrains the spectator to unravel the past of his family, while he reveals us aspects that are little-known, but always indispensable for learning and reflecting our history. It is undoubtedly a work that merits further consideration and that seems to set the starting point of a promising trajectory of this talented Mexican artist in search of new discourses and narratives.
